The Bread of the Strong

It is not only for others that I must have these retreats.  It is because I too am hungry and thirsty for the bread of the strong.  I too must nourish myself to do the work I have undertaken; I too must drink at these good springs so that I may not be an empty cistern and unable to help others.--Dorothy Day, The Long Loneliness, pg. 263
For more on Father John Hugo who gave the retreats she so often attended, see here.  For audio of the famous retreat, see here.  For a discussion of his sources, see here.  For his own discussion of the impact his retreat had on Dorothy Day, see here.
